STOP PRESS
We Regret to advise that a contract to sell the Melanesian Discoverer has been concluded which takes effect in Nov 2006.
There are a number of reasons for the sale of the vessel which include the continued increases in the cost of fuel, the reduction in tourist arrivals to PNG due to lack of competitive airfares, inability of the PNG TPA to develop policies to protect PNG owned maritime facilties such as the Melanesian Discoverer.
For 5 years we have been struggling to compete against foreign vessels undertaking cruises in PNG waters. We are competing for the same business, the same client and whilst we have far greater knowledge of PNG, the cultures we are not based in the major markets.
The good news is that we intend to either build or purchase a new vessel which will be available for charter to the Sepik River, the Islands and equipped for diving. We are in the planning stage at present but the vessel we have in mind will have 4 or 5 twin/double cabins with ensuite and operate exclusive charters.
MTS has been contracted to act as Agents in PNG for a number of foreign vessels and our experienced staff will act as guides on these vessels, so even though we are concluding the sale of the Melanesian Discoverer, we will remain in the business and continue to provide the same high standard of services as we have in the past.
The sale of the Melanesian Discoverer will have no effect on the operation of the Madang Resort, Kalibobo Village, Malagan Beach Resort or Niugini Diving Adventures. We will continue to develop these properties and services and in addition, we are looking at new opportunities in tourism in PNG.
PNG remains the greatest untouched tourist destination in the Pacific and we look forward to your continued support.
